Week 2 of Box City!

Students in the Team Empathy and Team Cooperation, combined with Mrs. Babcock and Ms. Schuff's Kindergarten classes built their Box City Citizens this week out of a pipe cleaner!

During Art class this week, they will be able to design and dress their Box City Citizens!

Stay tuned for the fashion show of the Box City Citizens!

Mrs. Duquette's Class Needs Your Help!

We are collecting recycled trash!

Our task:  To build a HOME for the Leprechaun, in hopes that he will stay with our classroom!

The children will be working in small groups to build their “homes” on Wednesday or Thursday (weather permitting).  Please send any materials that you would recycle (For example: toilet paper rolls, paper towel rolls, cereal boxes, shoe boxes, caps from milk, etc.), to school Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday!  (NO CANS AND NO GLASS please!)  Shoe boxes are the perfect size and starting point for their homes.

STEAM is the combination of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. I love to combine subjects to help encourage creative thinking in the kids. With St. Patrick’s Day coming up this was the perfect tie in to combine creative thinking, engineering and St. Patrick’s Day!

Thank you very much!

The first part of our upcoming project, students will be listening to the book Iggy Peck Architect.  Students will have the opportunity to build using recycled materials after listening to this story (if time/weather allows!)  Please send in recycled materials to school this week so the kids can practice building prior to the start of the official Box City Project!

As a reminder, here is some information on our upcoming project:
Our kindergarten, first and second graders will be participating in Box City.  A program sponsored by the New Hampshire group of the American Institute of Architects.

Box City is an interdisciplinary program in which students work together to design and build a scale-model town from the ground up. Children answer the question "What makes a good city?" and learn how they can participate in improving their built and natural environments. AIANH architects and volunteers coordinate the event and oversee the program.

We are looking for help in collecting boxes, 8" tall for two story buildings and 12" tall for three story buildings.

Volunteers are needed to help in your child’s classroom. We are excited to share that your child will be working with their peers to create a model of our city made out of boxes. As they learn to plan a box model of our city with local architects, they will develop their 21st century skills in the areas of collaboration and cooperation. In addition, they will learn and apply many valuable math skills through this hands on learning experience. Can you help?  Volunteers are needed to work with their child’s classroom to make this project a success. Volunteers are needed every Thursday starting Thursday Feb, 23, 2017 through Thursday, April 20, 2017. From 9:30 - 11:30 AM. On Feb. 23, 2017, volunteers will be needed starting at 9 AM. Grandparents are welcome to volunteer too. Please send a note to your child’s teacher or email Miss Jobel at kjobel@mansd.org,  if you can help by Monday, Feb. 13, 2017.

We are also looking for donations of the following items:
 · Straws
· Tree material (like from Michaels or other craft store)
· Brown paper towels (roads) approx. 12” wide
· Duct Tape (sidewalks)
· Popsicle sticks (bridges)
· Pipe cleaners (people)
· Plastic Blue table cloth (river)
· Plastic Green table cloth (green spaces)
· Round color-coding dots (3/4” dia.) in 4 colors to stick on the Box City lots to help students match building type with available lots for that type (Zoning)
· Hard Hats (this makes it fun to have the kids wear them when they are on the “Construction Site”)
· Glue Sticks & Pencils

Please send in all donations by Friday, Feb. 17, 2017

Although it is hard to believe, Spring will be here before we know it.  With the warmer weather, comes many opportunities for Field Trips and other activities where we will be looking for parent volunteers/chaperones for field trips.  In order for anyone to volunteer at any of these events, like chaperoning a field trip, every person must attend a volunteer orientation offered by our school Social Worker, Mrs. Drechsel.  Please contact the school for when the next Volunteer Orientation is being offered.  Plan ahead to attend an orientation if you are even only considering chaperoning or helping out this school year!

As of Friday, February 10, 2017...
